Every year on Oct. 10, the world observes World Mental Health Day, a global reminder that mental health is not separate from physical health. It’s foundational to how we live, how we work, how we parent, how we connect, and how we heal.

At Marion County Hospital District, that belief is built into everything we do.

Mental Health as One of Our Prevention Pillars

Prevention is one of our five core health pillars, and mental health is at the center of it. When we talk about preventing chronic disease, reducing unintentional injuries, and improving the overall health of Marion County residents, we cannot have that conversation without talking about mental and emotional well-being.

Research consistently shows that untreated mental health conditions are closely linked to increased risk of chronic disease, substance use, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and reduced quality of life. Conversely, when people have access to mental health support, they are better equipped to manage stress, make healthy choices, and engage with the rest of their healthcare.

Prevention is not just about physical screenings and wellness programs; it’s also about making sure every Marion County resident has access to the tools and support they need to thrive.

Beacon Point: Integrated Care for the Whole Person

MCHD funds Beacon Point, Marion County’s integrated care center that brings behavioral health, substance use treatment, recovery support, and primary care together under one roof. This model exists because MCHD believes that physical and mental health cannot be treated in isolation.

At Beacon Point, individuals can access behavioral health services, counseling, peer support, psychiatric services, substance use treatment, and primary care, all in one coordinated location. By removing the barriers of navigating multiple providers and systems, Beacon Point makes it easier for people to get the care they actually need.

No referral is required. Beacon Point is a walk-on campus open to all Marion County residents regardless of ability to pay.

Active Marion Project (AMP): Movement, Connection, and Mental Wellness

Mental health and physical activity are deeply connected. Regular movement reduces anxiety, improves mood, supports better sleep, and builds the kind of social connection that protects against isolation and depression.

Active Marion Project (AMP) supports mental wellness by helping Marion County residents and workplaces build cultures of movement and connection. Through workplace wellness programs, step challenges, the AMP app, and free community workshops, AMP gives people the tools to stay active, stay engaged, and support one another.

Fitness and Nutrition in Schools (FANS): Building Healthy Habits Early

Mental health doesn’t start in adulthood. Children who learn healthy habits early, including physical activity, nutritious eating, and positive social connection, can manage stress and navigate challenges as they grow.

The Fitness and Nutrition in Schools (FANS) program works directly with Marion County schools to build those habits from the ground up. From PE programs and school gardens to student-led FANS Clubs and family wellness events, FANS invests in the emotional and physical well-being of the next generation.

Community Home Project: Addressing the Root Causes

Mental health does not exist in a vacuum. Food insecurity, unemployment, lack of education, and housing instability all contribute to stress, anxiety, and poor mental health outcomes. Addressing those root causes is itself an act of mental health prevention.

Community Home Project (CHP) connects Marion County families to employment support, healthcare navigation, GED services, nutrition programs, and more at no cost. When families are stable and supported, mental well-being follows.

Healthy Ocala: Find Local Support

If you or someone you know is looking for mental health resources in Marion County, Healthy Ocala is a free online directory connecting residents with local behavioral health providers, counseling services, peer support, and more.

This October, Check in With Yourself

World Mental Health Day is a reminder to check in with yourself and with the people around you. Mental health challenges are more common than many people realize, and reaching out for support is one of the most courageous things a person can do.

We are committed to investing in the mental health and total well-being of every Marion County resident through prevention, education, and access to care. Because a healthier community means a healthier whole person.

Learn how Marion County is supporting first responder mental health and connecting those who serve our community with resources for their well-being.

Every day, the men and women of Marion County’s fire rescue, law enforcement, and emergency services run toward situations most people run from. They show up in the hardest moments of people’s lives, often without warning, without time to process, and without the option to look away.

September is a month that brings that reality into sharp focus. Most notably, on Sept. 11, 2001, first responders across the country answered the call in one of the most devastating moments in American history. The courage displayed that day has never been forgotten. It also left a lasting reminder of the physical and emotional toll that comes with a life of service.

Here in Marion County, MCHD is committed to making sure the people who protect our community have access to the mental health support they deserve.

The Weight of the Work

First responders face chronic exposure to trauma, grief, life-and-death decisions, and the kind of stress that doesn’t clock out at the end of a shift. Over time, that exposure takes a toll. Research consistently shows that first responders experience significantly higher rates of PTSD, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and substance use than the general population.

In past years, the culture of emergency services has made it difficult for individuals to seek help. Asking for support was seen as a sign of weakness in professions that pride themselves on strength and resilience. That culture is changing, and access to confidential, compassionate care is a critical part of making that change real.

Care Funded by MCHD

In Marion County, help is available for:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Depression

Anxiety

Sleep disorders

Addiction

Co-occurring disorders

Taking Care of Those Who Take Care of Us

We believe that a healthy community starts with healthy people, including the people on the front lines. Investing in first responder mental health is an investment in the safety and resilience of every Marion County resident who depends on these people every day.

If you are a first responder or the family member of one, you don’t have to carry it alone. Support is available, free, and confidential.
