This month, the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) is proud to recognize Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection, Marion County’s dedicated Children’s Advocacy Center. Since 1999, Kimberly’s Center has provided child victims of abuse and neglect a safe and comforting environment where they can begin their journey of healing, serving more than 1,300 children in 2025 alone.

Supporting Children Through Crisis: Trauma Intervention & Advocacy

When a child in Marion County enters the foster care system, the transition can be one of the most frightening moments of their young life. The Trauma Intervention & Advocacy program, made possible through the foundational support of the Marion County Hospital District, ensures no child faces that moment alone.

“The Trauma and Intervention & Advocacy program only came into being because of the support of the Marion County Hospital District,” says Kimberly’s Center Executive Director Dawn Westgate. “They helped us found that program, and have continued to support it to make sure that hundreds of children in Marion County have their physical and emotional needs met while they’re waiting for a foster care bed.”

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Kimberly’s Center’s Child Advocates work directly alongside the Department of Children and Families to provide comfort, stability, and essential resources to children during this uncertain time. Last year, the program supported 76 children through the foster care transition process.

The impact of this work is best understood through the stories it creates. Westgate recalls a sibling group of teenage girls who came to Kimberly’s Center after being removed from their home. While staff cared for them during the transition, they arranged a trip to a nearby store to get the girls new clothing. “We overheard a conversation they were having about how they’d never had new clothes in their entire life,” Westgate shares.

“For those kids, they are going to remember that kindness and that compassion while they were scared and didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Building Safer Childhoods: The Prevention Project

When Kimberly’s Center was ready to expand its reach into prevention — keeping children from needing intervention services in the first place — the Marion County Hospital District was among the first to step in.

“MCHD was one of the first to support our ability to be in classrooms throughout Marion County, teaching kids basic body safety, online safety, and bullying prevention,” says Westgate. “We’re really only able to do those programs because of the support of the hospital district.”

Through the Prevention Project, Kimberly’s Center brings the Monique Burr Foundation’s evidence-based Child Safety Matters curriculum to children and teens in every public school in Marion County, reaching 32,621 students in the 2024-2025 school year. This comprehensive, age-appropriate program equips children and adults with universal Safety Rules covering body safety, bullying, cyberbullying, and digital dangers. The Teen Safety Matters curriculum further addresses suicide prevention and boundary safety, empowering the next generation to recognize unsafe situations and speak up when it matters most.

A Partnership That Produces Lasting Impact

“The impact of these grants goes far beyond what we’re able to put on paper,” says Westgate.

“We know that the long-term impacts of childhood trauma are significant, not just for mental health, but also for physical health. The more we are able to intervene with kids while they’re going through active trauma, or prevent it in the first place, the better their outcomes are going to look on so many different scales.”

The Marion County Hospital District is proud to partner with Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection in support of these vital programs.

Summer in Marion County means more time outdoors, more time in the water, and more time in the heat. It also means more opportunities to take care of yourself and the people you love. At MCHD, prevention is at the heart of everything we do, and that includes helping our community stay safe during the months when certain risks run highest.

This summer, two of the most important things to plan for are drowning prevention and extreme heat. Here is what every Marion County resident should know.

Water Safety Risks Are Closer Than You Think

Drowning is one of the most preventable causes of death in the United States, yet it remains one of the most common. According to the American Red Cross:

An estimated 4,000 people die from unintentional drowning every year in the United States, an average of 11 deaths per day.

For every drowning death, there are two additional non-fatal drowning incidents.

Drowning is the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4.

It’s the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5 to 14.

Where Do Drownings Occur?

For children under 5 years old, 87% of drowning fatalities occur in home pools or hot tubs, most owned by family, friends, or relatives.

After pools, bathtubs are the second most common location for young children. Buckets, bath seats, decorative ponds, and even toilets also pose real risks for infants and toddlers.

Children ages 5 and older are more likely to drown in natural bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, and rivers.

The Threat of Drowning Risks

Drowning rates are significantly higher among Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native communities, particularly for children and young adults. According to the CDC, these disparities are closely tied to unequal access to swim education and safe swimming facilities. Closing this gap starts with access to swim education and intentional community investment.

What You Can Do

Ensure every family member learns to swim and achieves basic water competency: enter the water, stay afloat, change position, swim a short distance, and exit safely.

Always supervise children near water without distractions, including cell phones.

Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when boating or fishing, regardless of swimming ability.

Fence home pools and spas with four-sided barriers that separate the water from the house.

Learn CPR. Your ability to respond in those first minutes can save a life.

MCHD Resources To Practice Water Safety

MCHD’s Active Marion Project has partnered with GatorCPR to offer free Hands-Only CPR training for Marion County businesses and organizations. Minimum 10 participants are required and MCHD covers the cost. Contact AMP to schedule a training session for your workplace, school, or organization.

To find additional water safety and wellness resources in Marion County, visit the Healthy Ocala directory.

Local Spotlight: Harlow’s Helping Hands

Right here in Ocala, a local nonprofit is turning personal tragedy into community protection. Harlow’s Helping Hands was founded in loving memory of Harlow Will, who fought bravely for over 30 days before passing away. In his honor, the organization is dedicated to bringing awareness and providing families with essential drowning prevention resources, swimming lessons, and CPR training.

Their mission is to ensure that every child learns to swim, every caregiver knows life-saving CPR, and every family has the pool safety tools they need to prevent tragedy. You can find free downloadable resources on their website, including a Pool Safety Checklist and a guide to the Five Layers of Protection.

How To Beat the Heat in Marion County

Florida summers are intense, and extreme heat is one of the most dangerous and underestimated weather conditions we face.

According to the American Red Cross, heat illness can affect anyone, but those most at risk include:

Older adults

Infants, young children, and pregnant women

People with chronic medical conditions

Outdoor workers

People with limited access to air conditioning

Know the Three Types of Heat Illness

Heat cramps are the mildest form, involving muscle spasms and heavy sweating. Move to a cool place, drink water or a sports drink, and seek medical help if cramps last more than an hour.

Heat exhaustion is more serious. Signs include heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, a fast and weak pulse, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Move the person to a cool place, loosen clothing, cool the body with wet cloths or a cool bath, and sip water slowly. Get medical help right away if symptoms worsen, vomiting occurs, or confusion sets in.

Heat Stroke is life-threatening. Signs include a body temperature of 104 degrees or higher, hot and red skin, a fast and strong pulse, confusion, and possible loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately, move the person to a cool place, and cool their body right away. Do not give the person anything to drink. This is a medical emergency.

What You Can Do

Drink at least three quarters of a gallon of water per day, more if you are active or outdoors. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages.

Identify a cool location in advance if you do not have air conditioning at home, such as a public library, shopping mall, or cooling center.

Check on neighbors, older adults, and others who may be more vulnerable.

Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a moment.

MCHD Resources To Beat the Heat

If you or someone you know needs help finding cooling resources, food assistance, healthcare navigation, or other community support this summer, search the full Healthy Ocala directory for local resources including housing and utilities support, food assistance, and senior services.

MCHD Is Here Year-Round

Summer fun and community safety go hand in hand. Taking a few simple steps before an emergency happens is the most powerful thing you can do for yourself and your family.

MCHD is committed to investing in programs and resources that help our community prevent illness, stay safe, and thrive.

June is National Safety Month, and we believe safety and prevention go hand in hand.

Now in its 30th year, National Safety Month is a nationwide initiative led by the National Safety Council (NSC) dedicated to reducing preventable injuries and deaths at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. This June, we’re joining organizations across the country in raising awareness, because prevention is at the heart of everything we do.

Prevention Is the Foundation of a Healthier Community

As one of our core pillars, prevention means taking proactive steps before a health crisis occurs. We are committed to investing in community programs that support annual physicals, prenatal exams, blood pressure monitoring, cancer screenings, and other essential early diagnostics that can improve both lifespan and healthspan. Early detection saves lives. Catching a health issue before it progresses is one of the most powerful tools we have.

That commitment extends to the veterans in our community. Through our investment in the Vet Resource Center, Inc., we support early cancer detection and health education specifically for Marion County veterans, because those who served our country deserve proactive, not reactive, care.

Safety and prevention are two sides of the same coin. Whether we’re talking about wearing a seatbelt, scheduling a mammogram, or getting a blood pressure check, every small action is an investment in a longer, healthier life.

This June: Four Weeks, Four Life-Saving Topics

The NSC has organized National Safety Month 2026 around four weekly themes, each one relevant to everyday life here in Marion County.

Week 1 (June 1-6): Moving Safety Forward

The first week challenges all of us to advance a culture of safety with forward-thinking strategies. At MCHD, this means continuing to invest in the programs and partnerships that create healthier environments before emergencies arise. A proactive mindset is a safe mindset.

Week 2 (June 7-13): Staying Safe on the Roads

Marion County has busy roads, and road safety is a real concern for our community. This week focuses on practical guidance for drivers, pedestrians, and fleet workers to help reduce crashes. Whether you focus on putting down the phone, wearing a seatbelt, or watching for cyclists and pedestrians, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Week 3 (June 14-20): Promoting Holistic Worker Health

True health is physical, mental and emotional. This week highlights the importance of total worker well-being, including mental health, stress management, and work-life balance. This aligns deeply with our investment in behavioral health resources through Beacon Point, our integrated care center that blends mental health, substance use treatment, and primary care under one roof.

Week 4 (June 21-30): Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common, and most preventable, causes of injury, both at work and at home. Simple steps like removing clutter, improving lighting, and wearing proper footwear can make a significant difference. This is especially important for older adults and those managing chronic conditions that affect balance or mobility.

What You Can Do This June

National Safety Month is a reminder that prevention is a choice we make every day. Here are a few steps Marion County residents can take this June:

Schedule a preventive health screening. Annual physicals, blood pressure checks, and cancer screenings are among the most impactful things you can do for your long-term health. Don’t wait for a symptom to prompt action.

Talk to your family about road safety. Make a household commitment to distraction-free driving.

Assess your home for fall hazards. Check rugs, staircases, and outdoor walkways for potential risks.

Check in on your mental health. June is also a time to be honest about stress, anxiety, and your emotional well-being, and to reach out for support if you need it.

If you’re a veteran, connect with the Vet Resource Center for early cancer detection resources and health education designed specifically for those who have served.

MCHDT Is With You

The Marion County Hospital District exists to improve the health and wellness of every resident in our community, not just when illness strikes, but long before it does. National Safety Month is a perfect reminder that prevention is a year-round commitment, and we’re proud to be your partner in it.

This month, the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) is proud to recognize Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center (EBWCHC), a trusted community partner delivering accessible, compassionate primary care to residents of West Ocala and surrounding areas. Through a shared commitment to reducing barriers to healthcare, this collaboration is helping ensure that some of Marion County’s most underserved residents have a reliable, welcoming medical home they can call their own.

A Partnership Rooted in Community

Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center, led by CEO Levonda Goodson, was born from a deeply personal promise. The center is named after Estella Byrd Whitman, the grandmother of co-founder Carolyn Adams, and with that family legacy at its foundation, EBWCHC was built to serve the community the way a family member would. Alongside co-founder Dr. Pamela Lewin, the Adams family vision became reality when the center opened its doors in 2018 in the heart of West Ocala.

With the support of the Marion County Hospital District to add an additional provider and support staff, EBWCHC has been able to grow its capacity to meet the needs of patients who might otherwise go without care and those facing economic hardship, lack of insurance, language barriers, or limited transportation. The partnership reflects MCHD’s foundational mission: investing in community-based organizations that deliver lasting health equity.

Healthcare Built Around the Neighborhood

EBWCHC operates as a true neighborhood medical home, providing a comprehensive range of primary care services under one roof. Patients have access to point-of-care testing and basic labs, chronic care management, physicals and wellness exams, health education, a drug assistance program, telehealth, and family medicine.

Access to preventative care remains one of the most critical factors in improving long-term health outcomes. Through MCHD’s collaboration, Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center has been able to expand preventative screenings and services that were previously out of reach for many in the community. These services support early detection, reduce the risk of advanced illness, and empower individuals to take a more proactive role in managing their health.

Beyond clinical care, EBWCHC plays an essential role in addressing the broader factors that influence health and well-being. Through in-patient and post-hospital care coordination, specialty referrals, and patient-centered support services, individuals are guided through the healthcare system with clarity and confidence. The organization also emphasizes education that meets people where they are to ensure patients have the knowledge, resources, and support needed to make informed decisions about their care.

The center accepts insurance, offers a sliding fee program for those who qualify, and provides same-day walk-in appointments, removing logistical barriers that so often keep vulnerable residents from getting care. For the West Ocala community, which has historically lacked nearby access to quality healthcare, EBWCHC isn’t just a clinic, but a lifeline.

Strengthening Community Health Together

With MCHD’s support, Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center continues to expand its reach, deepen its services, and strengthen its roots in West Ocala. Their work reflects a shared conviction that quality healthcare is something every member of our community deserves access to, regardless of income, insurance status, or zip code.

This collaboration also strengthens the broader network of care within Marion County. MCHD’s partnership has helped serve as a conduit, connecting Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center with additional community partners, resources, and opportunities to expand its reach. Together, these efforts are improving coordination of care, increasing access to essential services, and creating more pathways for individuals to receive the support they need.

MCHD is proud to partner with Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center in building a healthier, more equitable community. Through continued collaboration, shared commitment, and a focus on patient-centered care, this partnership represents the kind of meaningful progress that benefits all of Marion County.

This month, the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) is proud to recognize FreeD.O.M. Health Clinic, a trusted community partner advancing access to free dental, optical, and medical care for uninsured and under-insured residents across Marion County. Through MCHD’s Dental pillar, this long-standing collaboration has helped ensure that thousands of residents receive essential care at moments when they need it most.

A Partnership That Restores Health and Confidence

FreeD.O.M. Health Clinic, led by Executive Director Ann Burnett, provides mobile, community-based care focused on meeting people where they are. The clinic offers comprehensive services including dental exams, X-rays, triage, extractions (simple and surgical), restorative care, and root canals bringing a full spectrum of dental treatment directly to those who would otherwise go without.

Funded in part by the Marion County Hospital District, FreeD.O.M. Clinic’s dental program is a cornerstone of this partnership. According to Burnett, the support from MCHD has been “an absolute blessing,” enabling the clinic to touch the lives of Marion County residents “one smile at a time.”

On average, the clinic serves approximately 1,200 to 1,500 unique individuals each year, reflecting the scale and importance of this community-driven work.

Restoring Smiles and Changing Lives

One of the most impactful MCHD-supported initiatives has been the denture program, which has helped patients regain not only their oral health, but also their confidence and opportunity.

Burnett shared the story of a Marion County resident working in the service industry who had struggled professionally due to missing teeth. After receiving dentures through the program, her transformation was life-changing, leading to a job promotion and the ability to purchase her own vehicle. She later returned to thank the team, a powerful reminder that restoring a smile can open the door to a completely new future.

A Network of Volunteers and Community Partners

FreeD.O.M. Health Clinic’s impact is made possible through an extraordinary network of collaboration. The program is supported by volunteer dentists, medical professionals, and students, including faculty and trainees affiliated with the University of Florida College of Dentistry, who supervise and participate in care delivery.

Local dental professionals also contribute significantly, opening their practices and donating time and resources to support clinic operations. Community partners including churches, schools, and local organizations play a vital role in helping mobilize services throughout Marion County.

Strengthening Community Health Together

With more than a decade of service supported by the Marion County Hospital District, FreeD.O.M. Health Clinic continues to demonstrate the power of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare needs. Their work reflects a shared commitment to removing barriers to care, restoring dignity, and improving long-term health outcomes for vulnerable residents.

This May, we’re recognizing National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, a national initiative that encourages people of all ages to get active and prioritize their health. At the Marion County Hospital District, this month is an opportunity to raise awareness about one simple truth: Physical activity is one of the most powerful ways to improve your health and quality of life.

The Power of Physical Activity

Physical activity is about moving your body in ways that support your overall well-being. Regular movement can deliver real, lasting benefits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 110,000 deaths per year could be prevented if U.S. adults over 40 increased physical activity. Just 10 more minutes of physical activity per day can make a measurable difference in health and longevity.

Being physically active can:

Strengthen your heart and lower the risk of heart disease

Help prevent and manage conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure

Improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression

Increase energy and improve sleep quality

Support a healthy weight and boost confidence

The best part? You don’t need a gym membership or intense workouts to see results. Even moderate activity like a brisk 30-minute walk can make a meaningful difference.

Small Steps Lead to Big Changes

For many people, getting started is the hardest part. That’s why raising awareness is so important. According to the CDC, adults under 60 see reduced risk of early death at around 8,000-10,000 steps per day. Adults 60+ see benefits at 6,000-8,000 steps per day.

Physical activity doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can start with small, simple steps:

Parking farther away from your destination

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator

Walking during lunch breaks

Spending time outdoors with family and friends

These small choices add up over time and can lead to significant health improvements.

You might be interested in: It’s Not Too Late to Start Exercising

Supporting Wellness Through the Active Marion Project (AMP)

MCHD is committed to making healthy living accessible to everyone in our community. One way we do that is through the Active Marion Project (AMP), a project of the Marion County Hospital District focusing on workplace wellness and community health education.

AMP helps residents turn awareness into action by offering:

Community-wide wellness initiatives

Educational resources and support

Workplace wellness programs

Fun and motivating Step Challenges

Free Workplace Wellness Assistance

Through Free Workplace Wellness Assistance, employers can create a culture of wellness through activity-based challenges, group health education, and incentive programs. Employers can use employee surveys to understand needs, implement health-promoting policies, provide point-of-decision prompts, and organize competitions and incentives through the AMP 2 app.

Stay Motivated With AMP Step Challenges

AMP Step Challenges are a great way to build healthy habits while staying engaged and accountable. Participants can track their daily steps, join teams, and take part in friendly competition.

These challenges help:

Encourage consistency

Build a sense of community

Make physical activity fun and rewarding

If you’re just starting your fitness journey or looking to stay on track, step challenges provide the motivation to keep moving.

Make Movement Part of Your Day With the AMP 2 App

The AMP 2 App makes it easier than ever to stay active and connected. With just a few taps, you can:

Track your steps and daily activity

Join challenges and monitor your progress

Connect with others in the community

Stay informed about wellness events and tips

It’s a simple, convenient tool that turns everyday movement into measurable progress. The Active Marion Project (AMP) created the AMP 2 app and uses friendly competition to encourage people to engage in physical activity in our communities. It automatically tracks your movement, allowing you to focus on walking rather than logging data. For every 100 steps you take, you earn a point, which can be redeemed for rewards through local partner businesses.

Supporting Your Whole Health With Healthy Ocala

Physical activity is a powerful step toward better health, but it’s just one part of the bigger picture. Overall wellness also includes mental health, access to care, and community support.

Through Healthy Ocala, the Marion County Hospital District connects residents to a wide range of local services. Through a free online directory, Marion County families can find support for:

Behavioral health and mental wellness

Substance use and recovery services

Food, housing, and financial assistance

Family, youth, and senior resources

Employment and education opportunities

If you’re looking to improve your physical fitness or navigate life’s challenges, these resources are here to help you take the next step.

To learn more or get connected, visit the Healthy Ocala directory of health community resources.

Building Healthy Habits Early With FANS

Creating a healthier community starts with our youngest residents. The Fitness and Nutrition in Schools (FANS) program is a free initiative designed to support both public and private schools throughout Marion County.

FANS focuses on reducing childhood obesity and preventing diabetes by helping students, families, and school staff adopt healthier habits. The program works by:

Increasing opportunities for daily physical activity

Promoting healthy lifestyle choices both in and out of the classroom

Creating a culture of wellness within schools

By encouraging movement and nutrition education at an early age, FANS helps children build lifelong habits that support their physical and mental well-being.

When students learn the value of staying active early on, they’re more likely to carry those habits into adulthood, leading to a healthier Marion County for generations to come.

Let’s Build a Healthier Marion County

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a reminder that every movement counts. By raising awareness about the benefits of physical activity, we can empower more people in Marion County to take control of their health.

This May, challenge yourself to move a little more each day, and encourage others to do the same.

Whether it’s joining an AMP Step Challenge, downloading the AMP 2 App, or simply taking a daily walk, every step you take brings you closer to better health.

This month, the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) is proud to recognize Transitions Life Center (TLC), a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to provide a safe, caring and enriching community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Creating Opportunities for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Founded with the vision of creating a safe, caring, and enriching environment, Transitions Life Center serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through programs designed to build independence, strengthen social connections, and expand life opportunities. Transitions Life Center provides structured programs that encourage personal growth, life skills development, and meaningful community engagement.

Through their programs, participants are supported in developing everyday skills, forming friendships, and gaining confidence as they navigate life in the community.

Connecting Individuals to Essential Health Resources

A key component of TLC’s impact is its Community Navigator program, a position funded by MCHD, which helps individuals and families access important services and resources.

The TLC Community Navigator builds a bridge to connect families and caregivers of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to social, educational, health services, and specialized programs to enrich their quality of life.

This service is available to anyone caring for an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Marion County.
These referrals may include:

Medical and dental care

Healthy food options

Healthy lifestyle resources

Community support services

The Community Navigator is also DEEP certified and provides DEEP (Diabetes Empowerment Education Program) training to caregivers and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This training equips participants and their support networks with valuable knowledge about healthy living, disease prevention, and managing chronic conditions.

Supporting Safe and Active Lifestyles

The Marion County Hospital District has been proud to support projects that help create safe and inclusive spaces for TLC members to stay active and engaged.

In previous years, MCHD provided funding for an outdoor basketball court and a swing, both installed with safety in mind. These additions allow individuals participating in TLC programs to safely enjoy physical activity, recreation, and social connection, important components of overall health and well-being.

The Marion County Hospital District is proud to partner with Transitions Life Center to expand access to essential resources, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen support systems for individuals and families across our community.

April is National Stress Awareness Month, a reminder that stress affects both your mind and body. Stress can worsen sleep, mood, and even diabetes management. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which can spike blood sugar and make self-care harder for people with prediabetes or diabetes.

We’re proud to offer local programs to help you reduce stress, improve wellness, and prevent chronic disease.

Move Your Body With the Active Marion Project (AMP)

The Active Marion Project (AMP) helps you manage stress through movement, education, and community support. These programs make healthy habits and stress management simple and fun.

Step Challenges and the AMP 2 App

Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to lower stress. To encourage Marion County to be more physically active, The Active Marion Project (AMP) created the AMP 2 app and uses friendly competition to encourage people to engage in physical activity in our communities. It automatically tracks your movement, allowing you to focus on walking rather than logging data. For every 100 steps you take, you earn a point, which can be redeemed for rewards through local partner businesses.

Free Workplace Wellness Assistance

AMP also supports local businesses with Free Workplace Wellness Assistance, helping employers create a culture of wellness through activity-based challenges, group health education, and incentive programs. Employers can use employee surveys to understand needs, implement health-promoting policies, provide point-of-decision prompts, and organize competitions and incentives through the AMP 2 app. By prioritizing wellness, companies help employees feel healthier, happier, and better equipped to manage stress on the job.

The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP™)

Managing diabetes is about more than just diet and exercise, it’s also about managing stress. High stress levels can affect blood sugar, disrupt sleep, and make it harder to stick to healthy habits. That’s why AMP developed the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP™) with tools to help participants manage stress alongside diabetes.

DEEP is an eight-week, science-backed curriculum offered for free to help those with prediabetes, diabetes, and their caregivers learn practical self-care skills, improve nutrition, increase physical activity, and develop strategies to reduce stress. The program also strengthens communication with healthcare providers and connects participants to community resources, creating a support network that eases anxiety and builds confidence in managing their condition.

By addressing stress as part of diabetes management, DEEP empowers participants to maintain better blood sugar control, prevent complications, and improve overall quality of life. The program’s emphasis on coping strategies, mindfulness, and healthy daily routines makes it a vital tool for both physical and mental wellness.

This month, the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) is proud to spotlight Vet Resource Center (VRC), a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to supporting veterans.

A Mission That Saves Lives

Under the leadership of President and Director Stephen Petty, Captain, U.S. Army, Retired, the VRC has launched a groundbreaking initiative to protect veterans from the long-term health effects of toxic exposures during service, such as burn pits and Agent Orange. With support from MCHD, VRC is bringing cutting-edge medical technology directly to veterans who need it most.

The Challenge: A Race Against Time

For many veterans who served in Southwest Asia from the Gulf War to recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the fight didn’t end when they returned home. Toxic exposures can trigger aggressive cancers that appear decades earlier than standard medical protocols anticipate.

Because routine screenings often start at age 40–50, younger veterans fall into a dangerous gap: they may feel healthy but harbor silent, fast-moving illnesses. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is often advanced.

VRC’s mission is to detect these illnesses early, giving veterans a fighting chance through advanced early-warning testing.

How Our Partnership Makes a Difference

MCHD is proud to support VRC in overcoming the biggest barrier to early detection, cost.

Together, we are:

Funding Advanced Testing

Early-warning cancer detection kits, which typically cost nearly $1,000, are now provided free of charge to eligible veterans.

Expanding Outreach

By leveraging corporate partnerships, VRC can reach working-age veterans through onsite testing at local employers.

Ensuring Rapid Response

Veterans who test positive are connected immediately with high-level diagnostic care, eliminating months-long delays.

By the Numbers: Saving Lives in Marion County

Marion County is home to an estimated 50,000 veterans. Our combined outreach efforts include TV spots, newspaper ads, and dedicated volunteers, including a Command Sergeant Major coordinating local efforts.

Since launching the program:

First Test Administered: Jan. 6

Tests Completed: Nearly 250, with more scheduled

Community Outreach: Over 2,500 individuals and 75 organizations engaged

A Life Saved

One early success story highlights the program’s impact: A veteran tested positive for early-stage pancreatic and bile duct cancer. Thanks to the test, the condition was caught at Stage 1, allowing for immediate treatment and a dramatically improved prognosis.

Looking Ahead

The Vet Resource Center continues to educate the community on the importance of early detection. Stephen Petty reminds veterans and civilians alike to listen to their bodies: Be aware of unexplained weight loss, persistent sores, or chronic coughs should never be ignored.

MCHD is honored to stand alongside VRC as they turn the tide against veteran cancer.

Navigating health and support services can feel complicated, especially during stressful times. Whether the need involves behavioral health care, housing stability, food assistance, or family support, knowing where to begin often makes all the difference.

Made possible by the leadership of Ben Marciano, Mayor of Ocala, and the Marion County Hospital District, Healthy Ocala is a free, easy-to-navigate online directory created to connect residents of Marion County with trusted local resources in one centralized location.

Healthy Ocala is designed to make access to care more transparent, organized, and community-driven.

“Your input helps make Healthy Ocala better for everyone.”

Building a Healthier Marion County
